The CoachEd Journey

Nick Burge
Founder of The CoachEd Journey
Difficult things can be over come when we make difficult decisions and make difficult sacrifices and when we create the right climate for the journey. Bring to walk up Everest in flip flops isn't going to make for steady (or safe) progress.

I have had the privilege of serving children, families and communities in three different schools as a Headteacher in Scotland. I have emerged by self in learning, leadership and building the capacity of others for over a decade. Through this journey, time after time, I see awesome professionals out there who are not be as awesome as they could be or that they want to be because the climate they are in does not help them on their journey to excellence.

Headteacher, Masters graduate, pilot, ski instructor, coach educator, international sports team manager; these are not who I am or was but are a none-exhaustive list of things I have achieved when the climate is right - when I have created the climate to make these things possible.. My mission is to continue to push myself to the 'next chapter', and in doing so support others in their own professional, learning and leadership journey.
The Full(er) Story
As a young boy who lived in three of the four 'home-nations', across six schools, who was dyslexic and who lost his dad when he was very 9 years old I developed a particular distain for learning and education. There was no point in my young life that I ever remember placing a high value or great deal of time into traditional classroom learning.
I never thought taking on the more difficult things in life would become a passion; seeing, facing upto and overcoming challenging but fulfilling endeavours, doing things that many would never have the drive to consider, taking set backs (plenty of them) along the way and still moving forward, seeing that failures and short comings are where the best learning lives and using these episode to accelerate my own journey.
Having been in the professional end of education for nearly 20 years and in Sanrio Leadership teams for nearly half of that I have been both at the leading and trailing edge of capacity building at individual and organisational level. Oe of my biggest frustrations is seeing people not believe and not a thieve...and I mean that for colleagues as much as I do the children and families that I have served. I have seen the power that come come from having the right person at the end of a conversations and more often than not, the best person is not the person who has the answers but who knows how to help you find them yourself.

I believe this can live in anyone and through The CoachEd Journey, I want to help others unlock this in themselves and their organisations so that they too can set, reach and often surpass their own professional and leadership goals.

Investing in Our People
Having been responsible for leading the growth of the women and girls game in Tayside and Fife from 2011 - 2014 as well as being both the Under 20 and Senior Womens Team manager for the 2015 6 Nations I was charged with both the development of a sporting-performance programme and a volunteer-development programme. Investing in our people (players and coaches) was at the core of our work in T & F. To see many of those players now come through the senior women's 15's and 7's programme is a testament to the collective effort of our team at that time and the personal pursuit of excellence that was at the core of this amazing group of players.

The Power of Learning & Commitment
To be able to pilot an aircraft is perhaps one of my greatest accomplishments; simply because of the pure academic nature of passing exams (a lot of them), on top of having the aptitude to fly an aircraft thousands of feet in the air.
Why is this relevant to The CoachEd Journey? In order to this, whilst being a Headteacher and undertaking a my masters degree at the University of Edinburgh, it took commitment, planning, prioritising and managing my emotions, at what were often very stressful times.I also had to consider carefully how all of this would be accomplished with a young family - proof above all else that having the right supports around you a central to unlocking our greatest accomplishments
